Why Is It Important to Get an Appraisal?
Whether you have bought a diamond or colored gemstone jewelry, getting a professional appraisal/authentical report and keeping it updated is critical. An appraisal is necessary for four reasons:
- To verify the facts about the jewelry you have purchased (especially important with the abundance of new synthetic materials and treatments.)
- To obtain adequate insurance to protect against theft, loss, or damage.
- To establish adequate information to legally claim jewelry recovered by the police.
- If items are lost or stolen, to provide sufficient information to make sure they are replaced with jewelry that is of comparable quality, if that is what your insurance policy provides.
The need for appraisal services has increased greatly because of the high incidence of theft and sharp increases in the prices of diamonds and colored gems. It has become necessary to
have any gem properly appraised, particularly during a purchase decision, given today's costs and potential for financial loss if the gem is not accurately represented. In addition, current and
accurate appraisal may be needed in connection with inheritance taxes, gifts, or the determination of your net worth.
